West Midlands Police have started a murder investigation after a teenager was stabbed in Birmingham city centre and has died in a tragic case of mistaken identity.
Police were called to Victoria Square on 20 January after a 17-year-old boy, named Muhammad Hassam Ali was found seriously injured at just before 3.30pm.
Despite being taken to hospital urgently, he tragically passed away. The force are deeply saddened by his loss and will provide his family and friends with any assistance they need during this difficult time.
The police are currently examining CCTV footage and conducting other investigations to identify the culprit.
After completing the initial inquiries, we have removed the cordon, but we will maintain a strong police presence in the vicinity.
Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood, from the force’s homicide team, said: “This is a tragic case of a young man being killed in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
“We are still trying to establish the motive and are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area just before 3.30pm yesterday.
“We are especially looking for any photos or video footage from the surrounding area which may help us identify those responsible.
“If you were walking through the area at the time, or a visitor who may have been taking pictures by The River statue near the Council House, we would like to hear from you as you may have vital information or evidence.”
