The ex-miner and his wife had lived at the address for around 20 years, it is believed.
Following the incident, one stunned neighbour said: “This is shocking news. It is a nice neighbourhood and for this to happen, it is shocking.
“We never really saw Dennis much. I think he had a son.”
Another told reporters: “Yesterday lunchtime a forensics van pulled up. We never saw much of him, he was quite a quiet chap.
“Like any pensioners they would go shopping once a week, get the car out of the garage and come back.
“Other than that they rarely left the house.”
“Police were outside the house for three days and nights and CID were knocking on every door,” added a nearby resident.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “An 80-year-old Cannock woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of her husband.
“Mavis Eccleston, who is charged with the murder of Kenneth Eccleston, who was also known as Dennis, on February 20, 2018, at an address in Huntington, Cannock, pleaded not guilty.
