Aasia Bibi, 21, was forced into an arranged marriage with Amjad Akram, 25.
The newlywed has been charged with murder after poisoning milk, which she planned for her husband to drink, yet killed 15 members of her extended family.
Two months into her marriage in Pakistan Aasia attempted to escape to her parents house, but a senior police officer said she was “forcibly sent back to her in laws’ house.”
Aasia planned to murder her husband by poisoning a glass of milk; his refusal of the drink lead to his mother using it to make a batch of Lassi, serving it to 27 members of her family.
15 family members have died and others are in critical condition.
The officer also claimed “Aasia concocted the plot to avenge being married against her will and was provided with poisonous substance by her alleged lover, Shahid Lashari”.
Bibi first stated a lizard fell into the milk and poisoned it, however later confessed her crimes in court.
Aasia Bibi, her lover and her aunt have all been arrested on the suspicion of participating in the incident.
Bibi argued her lover gave her the poison yet she did not use it; she also declined his proposal of marriage. Her vengeance lead to her being charged for murder.
The incident took place in the Daulat Paur area in Muzaffargarh in the southwest Punjab region of Pakistan.
According to the cases reported to UK’s forced Marriage Unit in 2016, Pakistan has the highest number of forced marriages, and there is little remedies to help the women who are married against their will.
