‘Tories in London have turned their backs on apprenticeships – I will fight to overturn this decision’ – Siôn Simon
Siôn Simon, Labour’s candidate for West Midlands Mayor, is to lead the fightback against the Tory government’s decision to deny further education colleges in the West Midlands the right and the funding to deliver apprenticeships.
The government has refused to grant permission and funding for 13 further education colleges across the West Midlands to provide apprenticeships to young people.
Details have emerged following last Tuesday’s publication of the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers by the government. Only providers on the register can secure the funding to provide apprenticeships.
Mr Simon said:
“This decision will all but end technical education for young people in the West Midlands as we know it.
“13 colleges, and many companies – good quality training providers, from across the West Midlands will be blocked from receiving the funding for apprenticeships. But not if I have anything to do with it. We must get this decision overturned.
