An Indian businessman chose to celebrate his daughter’s wedding by building 90 homes for the homeless. Ajay Munot had set aside Rs 70-80 lakh for his daughter Shreya’s wedding when he decided it could be put to better use.

Both the bride and groom were extremely supportive of the decision and personally handed over the keys to the newly housed owners after the wedding was over. Shreya is quoted as saying, “I am very happy with the decision and will consider it as my marriage gift.”

Ajay, a cloth and wheat wholesaler from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, got the idea from Prakash Bamb, a politician in the Bharatiya Janata Party. Those chosen to live in the houses were poor, living in slums and addiction free. The houses are 12 by 20 square feet with two windows, electricity and access to filtered water.

Ajay told the media:

“This is the new chapter in history and I hope that the same concept will be followed by the other rich communities,” he said. “We have some responsibilities towards our society and we tried to comply with it.”
