The power couple who married in August 2014 will be ending their marriage, according to court documents the couple separated on September 15th 2016. Jolie has requested sole custody of their six children and visitation rights for Pitt.
Pitt released a statement saying, “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids” he went on, “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Jolie’s attorney also emphasised the priority of the family stating, “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
The couple first met in 2004 on the set of their film Mr and Mrs Smith, Pitt was married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston at the time. In 2005 Pitt and Aniston announced their split and filed for divorce, shortly after Pitt and Jolie emerged as a couple. Pitt became the legal adopted father of Jolie’s adopted children and the couple also had three biological children.
They announced their engagement in 2012 and married in 2014.
Pitt and Jolie had an eventful relationship, he supported his wife when she underwent a double mastectomy to prevent a high risk of cancer. She also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed for the same reason, the couple openly spoke about the decisions. They also starred in a movie together in 2015, By the Sea directed and written by Jolie, a film about a couple’s disintegrating marriage.
Most notably the pair were active charity givers contributing to many causes, they established the Jolie-Pitt foundation in 2006 to aid humanitarian causes around the world.
