Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is being lauded as the third best movie of 2016, following closely behind Sultan and Airlift.  It is also the third movie of Akshay’s to break the 100 crore mark this year, Airlift and Housefull 3 being the other two.

Rustom is based on the historic landmark case of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra, in which a naval commander was accused of murdering his wife’s lover.

However it has now been revealed that before Akshay Kumar’s hit was announced, Aamir Khan had been planning on making a film on Nanavati too.

A source close to Aamir’s team told DNA India:

“Some of us, who were researching for the project, are disheartened after seeing Rustom. It has very little to do with the case. The tone of our film was going to be totally different. It’s one of the most important cases of our times and deserved to be brought to celluloid with some responsibility.”

Another source said “Aamir was very eager to do a film on the case. He was collaborating with director Ram Madhvani on the same. After the director helmed the true-life account in Neerja effectively, Aamir felt Madhvani was the best filmmaker to piece together the intricate jigsaw pieces of the real-life Nanavati case.”
