The hopes of India achieving it’s first Olympic gold have reached a frenzy after two-time world championship bronze medallist PV Sindhu defeated Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzy Ying.
Eighth seeded Tai Tzy, who won silver at the London 2012 Olympics and was a favourite to win at this year’s Olympics, lost 21-13 21-15 against Sindhu who dominated almost the entire match.
Sindu, world no. 10, stole the win after just a 40 minute match. She remains India’s only hope for Olympic glory after Saina Nehwal lost to unseeded Ukranian Maria Ulitina.
After securing her place in the quarter-finals, Sindhu is to face off against Wang Yihan, Chinese. At their last match in Denmark, Sindhu clinched the win 21-18, 21-19. Currently Yihan is the world no. 2.
