Samia Shahid, 28, died during a visit to her ancestral home in Northern Punjab. Her husband, Syed Mukhtair believes she may have died at the hands of her family in an honour killing.
Samia had originally divorced her first husband and married Mukhtair, something Mukhtair believes her family had opposed.
It is thought her family did not approve of Mukhtair as he was from a different Islamic sect.
Pakistani police have launched a murder investigation and are treated the death as suspicious. Samia’s father is being investigated and her first husband, Choudhry Shakeel, has gone on the run.
The police are working with UK authorities. Bradford MP Naz Shah has written to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Shariff, asking for Samia’s body to be exhumed and for an independent post-mortem examination to be carried out. Shah has since received death threats from a relative of Samia’s, who has now been arrested by West Yorkshire Police.
Police are awaiting toxicology reports.
