Firearms officers were called to Barrows Road, Sparkbrook, around 8.15pm Wednesday night after two cars were hailed with bullets whilst driving.
A man has been rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound and both cars have now been seized for examination.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said “shortly after 11pm, officers were called to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where a man had been admitted with non-life threatening injuries to his shoulder.
“The 22-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, but remains in hospital for treatment.”
After poice arrived, the area of the incident was closed off as forensics teams began to examine the scene.
A police manhunt is underway in order to find out more information.
One local, Donald Newell, 70, said “I heard about five, six bangs but I thought it was firecrackers. They are always going off round here so I was relaxed about it and didn’t think anything of it.
“When I looked out the window, I saw that the police had barred the place off. I went across the road and asked one of the guys what was going on and he said it was a shooting.”
