Toyota vehicles including the Prius hybrid, Lexus CT200h and Prius plug-in, have small cracks in air bags in the driver and passenger sections. This could cause the bags to expand and partially inflate.
No injuries or accidents have been yet reported of the recalls from 1.42 million vehicles internationally.
Reportedly 141,000 vehicles contain the defect, nearly a quarter of which are British.
743,000 vehicles in Japan, 9,000 vehicles in China, 495,000 in North America and 46,000 vehicles in other countries are being recalled.
The vehicles in question were manufactured in two factories in Japan between October 2008 and April 2012. Toyota will soon release a statement to customers who could be affected.
