The Bollywood star has been given a week for his apology and if he refuses to, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said that he will be issued with a summons.
Salman Khan realised his blunder almost immediately and withdrew his statement but many media outlets only showed the “raped woman” comment.
Fuming Twitter users have criticised him, and the hashtag #InsensitiveSalman was trending on Tuesday.
A counter campaign is trending #Salmanmisquoted.
Khan is a boxer in his next film Sultan.
Khan’s full quote, according to audio recordings released by the media was: “When I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out.”
As journalists start chuckling, he says, “I don’t think I should have” and attempts to clarify that he found it hard to walk.
However, a number of Twitter users said that irrespective of his swift withdrawal, he should on no occasion have made the association in the first place.
But masses of the star’s fans lined together to trend the rival hashtag #SalmanMisquoted which soon surpassed the initial trend.
Khan hasn’t made any declaration of an apology or a defence of his original comment.
