23-year-old Hayden Gager, from Coventry, has started a remote control ‘drifting’ car club with his friends in an attempt to get troubled youngsters off the streets.
He hopes the club will take drifting, a driving procedure where the driver deliberately over steers, off the roads and onto a reduced scale track.
The group meets at Wyken Community Centre, in Ennerdale Lane, once a month.
Hayden said: “I originally approached a few friends who had the same interests, and then once we set it up, we promoted it on Facebook.
“If people have their own cars, they can just come off the street and join us, but we also have cars for people to use if they don’t have their own.
“We are the only group in Coventry and being based in Wyken we are central for people to come and join us.
“If people like cars we want them to avoid messing around on the roads and drifting out on the streets.
“We want people to get into cars but without the danger of going onto the streets and putting other road users in danger.”
The club also welcomes people who just want to socialise and those with learning difficulties.
He added: “For people like myself, who either have learning difficulties like ADHD or are just shy, we want everyone to come together.
“When we hold the meetings it’s a real community feel.
“If they like cars they are encouraged to join us. We want them to have fun but not be in danger.
“It is a lot safer when it is in this sort of controlled environment, but it also builds my social skills while I interact with different people.”
Hayden and the group try to meet on the third weekend of every month. They hope that more people will join them and try out the new hobby that they are propelling into the community.
