Asians on Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2016

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2016 has acknowledged a number of British Asians who have been honoured for their achievements and services to the community.

A record number of 90 people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2016, which is the highest ever.

Published on 10th June, 2016, just in time for Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday celebrations, 1,149 people have received an award.

People have been honoured for the exceptional work for the community as well as their remarkable achievements within their own communities across the UK.

A number of renowned British Asian names appeared on the Order of the British Empire list, including Adil Ray, known for his British Comedy TV show, ‘Citizen Khan’, who received an OBE for his services to Broadcasting.

He said: “Many of our forefathers worked and lived as part of the British Empire and I think it says a lot about us as a community today and the progress we have made that we can be honoured like this.

“I feel incredibly fortunate and wish that we can all go on to follow our dreams.”

Joining him on the Honours list is Romy Gill, the first female Indian chef to own a restaurant as the head chef of Romy’s Kitchen. She received an MBE for her services o the Hospitality industry.

She said: “I simply couldn’t believe it. I come from a very small village in India, from a very ordinary family, so I never considered that I would ever get anything like this.”
