Inside Birmingham Children’s Hospital begins to see Channel 4 cameras with first-time access to one of the greatest progressive paediatric units in the world.
It will be aired in 10-parts, and narrated by David Tennant. The series also features more than 50 of the 3,700 members of staff and masses of the 1,000 families who visit the hospital daily.
The cameras film the emergency department and, for the very first time, inside one of the leading intensive care units in Europe.
Executive Producer, Emma Loach says: “We were thrilled to be able to film in Birmingham, such a vibrant and diverse city. It was our first choice.
“We wanted to make a warm series about parenting and what it means to bring up a child in the UK now.
“Any family can walk through the door at any time, it’s a real leveller. Everything is heightened when you step inside, it’s an extreme but wonderful place.”
Preparations for the series started approximately three years ago. Planning took a year, with a number of staff meetings, then patients who were followed for up to 18 months.
Emma Loach says: “You can’t just turn up with a camera and expect to film. Planning is everything, getting the protocols right so the staff felt confident about issues of access and consent was really important.
“We needed a critical mass of support and most people thinking it was a good idea or it wouldn’t have worked.”
