Dipa Karmakar qualifies for the Olympics after a strong performance at the concluding qualifying and test event.
Deepak Kagra, an international referee, told PTI: “It was a very good score from Dipa and we were certain that she would qualify. Now the world body has published the names of the gymnasts who have qualified for the Olympics and her name is there. The gymnastics community is proud of Dipa’s achievements.”
The 22-year-old has already created history by becoming the first female gymnast to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasglow in 2014. She has then gone on to become the first Indian female gymnast to feature in the finals of World Championships in last November.
The sport of gymnastics has caused mayhem in India over the last few years with opposing parties holding elections and claiming to be the national federation. Even camps for gymnasts have been held under the protection of Sports Authority of India.
