British Asians Recognised in New Year Honours List 2016


The Queen’s New Year Honours List for 2016 has seen numerous British Asian men and women recognised for their outstanding contribution to society.


Selected from across a number of different sectors, including local government, enterprise and charity, a total of 1,196 individuals have been honoured with a title, of whom 5.7 per cent are from ethnic minority backgrounds.


A considerable number of British Asians have been chosen to receive the prestigious titles of Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM), to name a few.


A substantial number of British Asian women have also been featured in the list, amounting to 48 per cent of female candidates awarded overall.


The Midlands region also saw a significant sum of British Asians honoured, including Mr Abdullah Rehman (MBE), Mr Aftab Chughtai (MBE), Mr Nasir Awan (MBE), and Mr Habib Rehman (BEM).


Communities Secretary, Greg Clark, congratulated those individuals honoured, saying:


“These individuals have made an extraordinary contribution to society and I am delighted that they have been honoured in this way.”
