Three Charged Over Incident
Three men, including a Birmingham Police officer, have been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.
PC Amar Tasaddiq Hussain, a 29-year-old working for Birmingham West & Central police unit, was charged with two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and two counts of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office. He has been suspended from duty with immediate effect.
Two other men have also been charged with the same four offences. They are 25-year-old Adil Bashir, who is unemployed and from Small Heath, and 30-year-old Muhammad Sheikh, a self-employed tutor from Bordesley Green.
All have been released on police bail to appear at Cannock Magistrates Court on 7 October 2015.
The arrests follow an investigation into false and malicious information given to West Midlands Police on 8 December 2014 in which it was claimed an officer was to be kidnapped as part of a terrorist plot.
At a time when the national threat level was severe, the threat was considered credible and police acted swiftly to protect officers and police staff – but an investigation revealed the call was false and malicious. A 31-year-old man arrested on the day of the offence was eliminated from enquiries and has since been deported by Border Officials.
The investigation is being led by officers from West Midland Police’s Anti-Corruption Unit with support from the Counter Terrorism Unit.
