Ecstatic scenes of celebration were seen at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Saturday 27th September 2014,after Big Johns won the T20 final trophy.
Almost a crowd of 1000 people turned up for the Local Leagues Finals day tournament marking the end of a successful season for Big Johns Cricket Club. The crowd were entertained with a wonderful display of cricket along with dhol players and food.The weather was unusually warm for the time of season but added to the atmosphere at the ground.
Big Johns set a target of 162 to win off 20 overs for Local Leagues rivals Gujjarkhan Cricket Club. Omar Ali – brother of England player Moeen Ali knocked 63runs off 35 balls in his innings.Umair Mir hit 52 off 30 balls faced. Qadir Ali – also the brother of Moeen Ali took three wickets at crucial points in the game giving 12 runs in his four over spell. Tahir Naqash and Kasim Shah took the remaining wickets between them showing a wonderful display of pace and spin bowling. Gujjarkhan eventually were all bowled for 115 runs almost 50 runs behind.
The win sealed a great Season for Big Johns Cricket Club, three weeks ago they won the first division title, unbeaten whole season and almost 80 points ahead of their nearest rivals Calthorpe Cricket Club. Last Sunday they also won the 30 over trophy beating again Calthorpe Cricket Club.
” I am extremely proud of our team, they have played exceptionally well throughout the season remaining unbeaten in all competitions. Shafiq Mushtaq team Captain has assembled a great team of players who have a great work ethic and team spirit” said team Manager Bob Saddiq.
” I have some exceptional players in my team and we are also honoured to have England spin Bowler Moeen Ali’s brothers Omar and Qadir Ali also playing for us. These players encourage the younger players and also give incentive to the next generation of cricketers at grassroots level to excel in this sport. They are good role models to follow”
Big Johns cricket club look forward to next season where they will strengthen the squad with more talent but more importantly will be playing in charity matches to raise funds for needy causes through their foundation.
