Six men, one woman detained following raids across the city

POLICE in Birmingham have arrested seven people in anti-terror raids across Birmingham.

Six men, and one woman, were detained overnight as part of a large pre-planned, intelligence-led counter terrorism operation.

West Midlands Police say the men were detained on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism in the UK.

The woman, 22, from Saltley, was arrested on suspicion of failing to disclose information contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000.

The men, aged between 25 and 32, were from the Moseley, Sparkbrook, Balsall Heath and Sparkhill areas of the city.

Searches are now being conducted by specialist teams at these and seven other properties in the city – six domestic and one commercial.

Marcus Beale, Assistant chief constable of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, said: “The operation is in its early stages so we are unable to go into detail at this time about the nature of the suspected offences.

“However, I believe it was necessary to take action at this time in order to ensure public safety.”
