Victim was father-of-two Gurmukh Singh Chahal

A TELFORD man has been jailed for life for murdering his work colleague at a factory in Southall.

Balraj Singh, 44, stabbed father-of-two Gurmukh Singh Chahal at a business unit in Southall on 9 April.

Singh, of Weavers Rise, Ketley Bank, Telford, was sentenced to life-time imprisonment and told he would serve a minimum of 20 years.

No motive for the killing was ever established.

During a one-week trial, the court heard that police were called to reports of a stabbing at Mac-RK Engineering factory, on the Bridge Road Industrial Estate.

Officers and paramedics rushed to the scene and found Mr Chahal suffering a single stab wound to the lower chest.

His injury was so severe that emergency heart treatment had to be performed at the scene.

Despite efforts to save Mr Chahal, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Singh was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder and remanded into custody.

A post-mortem examination concluded that Mr Chahal died from a stab wound to the chest.

Speaking after the verdict Detective Inspector Steve Smith said: “The evidence against Balraj Singh was overwhelming. The Metropolitan Police service is committed and determined to ensure that people like Singh are held to account for their actions.

“Gurmukh Chahal leaves behind a young widow, a five-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son. I only hope that today’s verdict and sentence brings some comfort to the family and friends of Gurmukh Chahal.”
