Bungling thieves caught and held by home owners are jailed

TWO Leicester men who tried to burgle a house only to be caught and held by the owners until police arrived have been jailed.

Bungling thieves Pritpal Singh Gill, 28, and Kamal Chamund, 30, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery at Leicester Crown Court.

The two men broke into a house in Titchborne Street, Highfields on 13 September last year.

But their would-be-victims got the better of them; overpowering them before handing them over to police.

Gill, of Fosse Road South, received a 4 year sentence for attempted robbery and destroying and damaging property. He was also sentenced to another two years for breaching a previous suspended sentence order.

Chamund, of Blankley Drive, was jailed for three years for attempted robbery, and a further 8 months for a separate offence.

Detective Constable Denise Pritchard, the officer who investigated the incident, said: “We are really pleased with the outcome of this case, 9 years between the two offenders it a great result.

“Gill and Chamund’s attempt at robbery fell flat on its face when the occupants at the house managed to restrain them until we arrived. Both of them were charged the very next day and were remanded into custody until they appear at court.

“This is a great example of the public and police working closely together and what excellent results can come from it.

“I hope that this will act as a deterrent to any criminals in the future and will show them that we will put them behind bars in order to keep communities in Leicester safe.”
