Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda) is a Muslim child with Asperger syndrome. He grows up with his mother (Zarina Wahab) in the Borivali section of Mumbai.
As an adult (Shahrukh Khan), Rizwan moves to San Francisco living with his brother and sister-in-law. He falls in love with a Hindu single mother Mandira (Kajol) whom he later marries.
The couple live a blissful life up to the 9/11 attacks. Following on from here, Rizwan and Mandira begin to face a number of difficulties causing them to separate.
During that time the authorities arrest and detain Rizwan. They interpret the visible aspects of his condition as suspicious behaviour.
Whilst in detention, he meets Radha (Sheetal Menon), a therapist who helps him overcome the ordeal.
Rizwan then begins a long journey across the United States to find and meet President Barack Obama (Christopher B. Duncan) in order to clear his name and win Mandira back in this touching story of love and hope.
The movie has been directed by Karan Johar and stars the magic pair, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol after a period of nine years. They both appeared together in the box office hit, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham(2001).
