American Timothy Bradley could be Khan’s first opponent on US soil

PROMOTER Frank Warren has said that Amir Khan could be on course for a mouth-watering showdown with American champion Timothy Bradley.
The American holds the WBO light-welterweight title, and is a former unbeaten WBC king courtesy of an impressive win over Brit boxer Junior Witter.

Last weekend, he scored a controversial third round TKO victory against Nate Campbell in the States.

Writing in his weekly column for The Sun newspaper, Warren said that the 25-year-old Californian would be an ideal opponent for Khan in around 12 months time.

Khan, 22, became one of Britain’s youngest world champions when he out-pointed Andreas Kotelnik for the WBA world title last month.

“Another man on the horizon for Bradley is Khan in a mouth-watering unification fight,” said Warren.

“That fight is one I want for Amir, but it will be much bigger 12 months down the line when both men are established world champions and Amir has a bigger profile in the US.

“When promoters say a fight is for next year, it’s not because they are scared of taking it, but because they want to maximise the earning potential of their fighter.

“That’s the case here.”

Khan meanwhile is still determined to crack America. Warren revealed earlier this month that businessman and close friend Robert Earl, who owns the Planet Hollywood franchise, is keen to host Khan in Las Vegas.

“Now I’m the world champion, I think it would be great to fight on American TV – to let the Americans find out who Amir Khan is,” Khan told Sky Sports.

“That’s the next step for me, exposing myself in America, and that’s what we are working towards now.

“There are a few promoters we are speaking to about where we can fight, but I’d like to fight in the States – next fight or the one after.”
