Coral Millerchip Sentenced to 44 Months
A Coventry woman has been handed a 44-month jail term for flooring a pensioner with a punch following a city centre altercation last summer.
Coral Millerchip, from Wyken, was sentenced at Leamington Justice Centre to 24 months for the assault and an additional 20 months for an unconnected burglary charge.
The 20-year-old had admitted assaulting Joginder Singh in Trinity Street on 10 August, shoving, kicking and punching the 80-year-old to the floor and leaving him with a cut nose and bruising across his body; she also spat on the pensioner as he lay on the ground.
Footage of the attack was caught by a passer-by on mobile phone camera which, when uploaded onto YouTube, attracted thousands of views and messages of indignation by viewers shocked by Millerchip’s outburst against an elderly man.
Mr Singh, from Canley, was treated at hospital following the assault; he was discharged and later re-admitted for a diagnosed illness which he was treated for until his death on Sunday 3 November.
Since Mr Singh’s death, detectives have liaised with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Coroner, following a lengthy and thorough investigation it was not possible to establish a link between the assault and Mr Singh’s subsequent death.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Markham, from Coventry CID, said: “We have continued to liaise with Mr Singh’s family throughout the investigation and they have been informed of today’s outcome.
“What happened to Mr Singh was deeply upsetting for everyone; it was a sickening assault. Despite the fact we could not show the assault and his death were connected the close proximity of events is something we have explored in great detail and recognise the family’s trauma. Our thoughts remain with them and those affected by Mr Singh’s death.”
