City of Wolverhampton Council has launched a campaign to encourage residents to report fly tippers to make them pay for their selfish criminal behaviour.

As part of the Keep Your Street Neat campaign, the ‘Shop a tipper’ initiative calls out to residents who spot fly tippers to report the offender to the council for a £100 reward following a successful fine or prosecution.

The council, which recently brought its waste services in house, will be changing how it responds to fly tipping reports working closely with its now in-house waste services team to remove fly tipping swiftly once it is reported. This will be coupled with a tough new approach to identify and deal with the perpetrators of this unacceptable crime.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment, said: “As a council, we make it our priority to keep our city clean and tidy. But little resource and repeated acts of fly tipping makes it almost impossible to achieve.

“At a time when the council needs to cut budgets by £40-£50 million potentially over the next five years, we need to pull together to reduce unnecessary expenditure and clamp down on illegal behaviour of fly tippers, which costs taxpayers over £300k each year to clean up.

“We know there are people out there who know who the fly tippers are. I encourage you not to ignore these criminal acts and become our eyes and ears by reporting those responsible and helping us keep our streets neat.”
