A Cannabis-based ingredient known as cannabidiol is set to be classed as a legal medicine by the UK medicines regulator. The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) first looked into cannabidiol, or CBD, after numerous manufacturing companies made “overt medicinal claims” about the product.
The director of inspection and enforcement at MHRA told Sky news: “The change really came about with us offering an opinion that CBD is in fact a medicine, and that opinion was based on the fact that we noted that people were making some quite stark claims about serious diseases that could be treated with CBD.”
There are two main ingredients in Cannabis, THC and CBD, the former of which is used in ‘weed’ in order to produce a high and the latter, when isolated, producing a calming effect. As such, many people use CBD in small doses as medicine. However a lot of these people obtain CBD online through unregulated and therefore potentially dangerous markets.
Making CBD legal will therefore eradicate the need for such markets and ensure sufferers can get their supply from safe sources.
