German police are combing the streets of Berlin after a suspected terrorist drove a lorry through a Christmas market, killing 12 people. They had originally arrested one suspect but have now released him after finding no evidence of his involvement.
Germany’s Spiegel Online has now reported that police are looking for a Tunisian man, named Anis A, after a Tunisian temporary-stay ID card was found in the truck used for the attack. Anis A is thought to be 20 years old and born in the city of Tataouine. Anis A is thought to have two aliases. Police are investigating North Rhine-Westphalia where the ID card was originally issued.
It is possible that there were more than one perpetrator- if so, all of which are currently at large. Islamic State (IS) have claimed responsibility for the attack via their Amaq news site, claiming it was “in response to calls to target nationals of the coalition countries,” but there is no evidence linking the suspect to the terrorist group. However, prosecutor Peter Frank said the style of attack – reminiscent of the Nice lorry attack – suggested Islamic extremism.
Hundreds of tips have come in from the public, aiding the police in their search. They are also examining DNA traces from the lorry and reviewing CCTV footage.
Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller said: “”The right thing is to keep your eyes open – be vigilant in this situation. But you can move around safely in public places.” Meanwhile numerous countries around the world have offered their support and made shows of solidarity, including the Brandenburg Gate and Birmingham Library.
