Violins, bansuri, cello, Kathak dancing- this is a fusion to remember. The SAA-uk, a south asian arts charity, have teamed up with University of Leeds to combine music and art together in an effort to promote awareness of public art.

The University has kicked off its Yorkshire Year of the Textile, a year-long initiative to reflect the University’s history, and have brought in the SAA-uk to collaborate with. They are to create a musical response to an art piece known as the ‘Dreamer.’ The historic sculpture first unveiled 34 years ago, by Quentin Bell, is the focal point of the musical composition which will be showcased on October 7th.

The show is free to attend and will be themed around the work mill where both eastern and western woman and children are driven to make an uncomfortable living.

SAA-uk’s artistic director, Keranjeet Kaur, says:

“In response to a beautiful sculpture of a woman levitating, we have created a contemporary expression of music, dance and light.

“Working closely with our sound expert, we have recorded the rhythmic patterns in one of the last working Mills, A.W Hainsworth & Sons in New Pudsey and evolved this sound by adding melody and creating a moving performance.

“Five talented artists; Vijay Venkat, Keertan Rehal, Liz Hanks, Jyoti Uniyal and Alex Delittle will perform on the evening and have combined, music, song and dance to highlight the delicacy, fluidity, strength and texture which explores our innate relationship with textiles.”
