The Indian Air Force has confirmed that an Antonov-32 transporter aircraft went missing during a flight between Chennai and Port Blair.
It is believed the plane was carrying 29 service personnel to islands near the Malacca straits, where India has a military base stationed. Anupam Banerjee, Wing Commander, said the last contact with the plane was made 15 minutes after takeoff.
The plane then made a sharp left and dipped in height.
The Press Trust of India news agency said AN-32s can fly for a maximum of 4 hours without needing to refuel.
According to the Ministry of Defence, 8 warships, 4 aircrafts, 12 ships and a submarine have been deployed in the search for the plane.
