Rohema Miah on America’s new President
VICTORY for Black Americans and justice in the face of the racism that has overshadowed America. Barack Obama, 44th President Elect has brought together and captured the aspirations, hopes and dreams of not only the people of the United States but to the people of all nations, races and faiths.
I was fortunate enough to attend the National Democratic Convention 2008 in Denver in August and was privileged enough to attend as Barack Obama accepted the nomination to stand as the Presidential Candidate on behalf of the National Democratic Party on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous speech. Today that dream has become a reality and has been realised within a lifetime of many of those that were forced to witness the death of that most famous civil rights campaigner and who believed that they had no standing in America.
In the final stages of the campaign one could only stand in awe of a man who has come from a modest and humble background to become the leader of one of the most powerful nations on earth.
But what does this mean for the Middle East? A problem that has faced leaders for over three decades. Can Barack Obama make a difference? Barack Obama has little experience in International Affairs but has always been against the war in Iraq. He has an experienced and a broad board of advisors but following a number of meetings focussing on Barack Obama’s policies and visions for the future and the difficulties that the President Elect will be facing I wonder as to whether this man who has offered hope of a fairer, safer and better world will be able to deliver.
Barack Obama is a man who said that diplomacy and not military might stars high on his agenda. Human Rights and a commitment to pursue peace and stability in the Middle East will be one of the toughest tasks to face the President elect. Two wars and a crippled economy to inherit from the current administration will not make this job any easier.
Barack Obama may be the least experienced President of America but he is aware of the hopes and dreams of the people who voted for him and of the global support that has been shown to him, I hope that he is able to turn the tide and maybe just maybe he can reconcile the differences to in return give that same measure of peace and hope to the people of the globe that he united in his quest for leadership.
